Gabriel R. Rios, M.L.I.S. named Director of the Ruth Lilly Medical Library at Indiana University School of Medicine



Indiana University School of Medicine is very pleased to announce that Gabriel (Gabe) R. Rios, M.L.I.S. will join our faculty in January 2014 as Director of the Ruth Lilly Medical Library. Gabe will serve as the senior administrative leader for the Ruth Lilly Medical Library (RLML) at Indiana University School of Medicine.  The RLML serves the 2nd largest medical student body in the country. Gabe will provide oversight for the delivery of academic and knowledge-based information resources and tools, as well as for aligning the library's strategic plan with the goals of the School of Medicine across our missions of education, research, and clinical service. 


Gabe comes to us from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences where he has served as Deputy Director and Associate Professor since 2006. Gabe holds a joint appointment in the UAB School of Medicine’s Comprehensive Center for Healthy Aging, where he serves as the health literacy consultant on several federal and foundation grants/awards. Mr. Rios also coordinates the library liaison program and serves as liaison for the UAB School of Dentistry. Gabe is an elected member of the Medical Library Association’s Executive Board of Directors and holds an appointment to the Biomedical Library and Informatics Review Committee of the National Library of Medicine.  He is a frequent lecturer at national meetings on a variety of topics in emerging technologies and health literacy for librarians.  Mr. Rios has published scholarly works in a number of peer-reviewed journal including the Journal of Library Administration and the Journal of Hospital Librarianship.
