The Library collections are located on the first floor.  The second and third floors, which originally housed bound journals, are now reassigned as the IU School of Medicine’s Learning Center.  The Learning Center floors are reserved for IUSM classes, testing, and health sciences student study space.

The Learning Center offers 24 hour study area access to IUSM M.D., Ph.D. students, Residents and Fellows.  The first floor of the Library is not accessible from the Learning Center after hours.  People who plan to stay after the Library closes at 9pm, must have a valid IUSM I.D. to present to staff.  The 24 hour area is also accessible through the second floor entrance with a valid IUSM I.D. card when the Library is closed.

Computer Use

Users of the Library's in-house computers and networks are expected to follow University policies.  Non-IU affiliated professionals, who wish to use the library computers for medical research, will need a guest log-in account.  Guest log-ins are available at the circulation desk with a photo I.D.  Guest passes are valid for one day.  Given the limited number of computers in the medical library, IU School of Medicine researchers receive priority over guest users.  The medical library’s online resources are also available from computers at other campus libraries offering public computer access.

Printing is available for a small fee per page with the purchase of a copy card.  Copy cards will pay for printing as well as photocopying.

Adjunct and Volunteer Faculty

  • To access Medical Library resources, adjunct and volunteer faculty need to establish a formal affiliate appointment before they can receive their IUSM ID and password. The IUSM ID and password allow the user to access library resources on- or off-campus.
  • The applicant's Department Chair or Center Director can request this appointment by following this procedure:
  • Go to Account Management Service
  • Click on Manage My IU Accounting Accounts
  • After authenticating, on the next page click on Request to Add IU Affiliate
  • Medical Library faculty and staff cannot provide passwords or sponsor affiliates

At Indiana University, retired faculty and staff can have a computing account, which allows access to library resources.  To receive this computing account, you must be retired according to IU's criteria.  For a list of the age and service requirements necessary to qualify as an official retiree, see Retiree Status and Benefits.

Currently, alumni are not authorized for an IU computing account, unless also affiliated with Indiana University as student, staff, faculty, retiree or affiliate appointment.
